Muster a musterer, maintain the mower and bench-press your better half - the Strath Taieri A&P Show is coming.

Show committee president Lynnore Templeton said the 114th show would be held at the Middlemarch Showgrounds this Saturday..

''A stunning valley with Central Otago climate, right on Dunedin's doorstep.'' was how she described it.

Although it would have the usual A&P show content, this year's show's point of difference was its novel three feature events.

In the ''carry your spouse'' event somebody would win their spouse's weight in ''liquid refreshments''.

Competitors would carry their spouse Estonian-style - the better half hanging upside-down with their legs around the other's shoulders, holding on to their waist - over a ''gruelling'' course which included a water obstacle.

Entries would be open on the day and anyone aged 18 or older could register.

Last year, two wives carried their husbands, she said.

The 2014 winners, Kate and Matt O'Connell, are returning to defend their title.

Another event, the ''modified lawnmower race'' is tipped to showcase some sharp driving skills.

''We get some pretty crazy modified lawnmowers and they can crack along at a fair old pace,'' Mrs Templeton said.

The ''musterer's race'' would have shepherds going head-to-head in ''a crazy action-packed race that will test both rider and horse.

''It's hugely entertaining and quite mad,'' Mrs Templeton said.

The committee aimed to provide a great day for good value.

''Almost all of the kids' entertainment is free, so mum and dad won't feel like they are reaching into their wallets all day.''

The children can enter their animal in the ''best dressed pet'' competition for a chance to win a trampoline.

For car enthusiasts, about 30 American and Australian classic cars will be on display.

The show will finish with a shearing competition about 5pm.

People from the coast could take the Taieri Gorge train to Pukerangi and be transported from there to the show and back in the afternoon, she said.

After the show, a Young Farmers club ''bark-up'' competition will be run at the Strath Taieri Hotel to find the sheepdog with the best bark.
