Arthur Barnett visual merchandiser Christopher Wilson, of Dunedin, displays props used in his winning entry in the Maxwell and Williams' historic palaces visual merchandising competition.

He was ''surprised'' his window dressing beat competitors from across New Zealand.

''It was nice to be recognised.''

He had been visual merchandising for 10 years, including four years at Arthur Barnett.

Mr Wilson dressed a window with a ''Union Jack'' theme using furniture and homeware from the store. In the window he included a British flag he owned and he borrowed a crown from a friend.

Competition judge Christopher Vine said ''Arthur Barnett's sumptuous visual display of royal extravagance was the standout amongst many striking entries New Zealand-wide''.

Mr Wilson won a weekend in Auckland for two, including accommodation at The Langham and a limousine tour.
