A man was  flown to Dunedin Hospital and a woman handed herself in to police following a shooting at Purakaunui this afternoon.

The Dunedin Armed Offenders Squad was called to a Purakaunui address, north of Dunedin, about 4.25pm.

Acting Senior Sergeant Ian Temple said a 51-year-old man was flown to Dunedin Hospital. He is in a serious condition.

A 34-year-old woman presented herself at the Dunedin Central police station about 5pm, and is helping police with their inquiries.

The address remains under guard but the wider Purakaunui area is safe for travel.

Our journalists are your neighbours

We are the South's eyes and ears in crucial council meetings, at court hearings, on the sidelines of sporting events and on the frontline of breaking news.

As our region faces uncharted waters in the wake of a global pandemic, Otago Daily Times continues to bring you local stories that matter.

We employ local journalists and photographers to tell your stories, as other outlets cut local coverage in favour of stories told out of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
