A Dunedin Hospital spokeswoman said last night the victim was in a stable condition and had been moved from intensive care to a general ward.
A 34-year-old woman appeared in Dunedin District Court on Saturday morning, charged with assault, and excess breath alcohol for getting behind the wheel almost four times over the breath alcohol limit when she allegedly drove to Dunedin Central Police Station about 5pm on Friday to hand herself in.
She was granted interim name suppression, because of the risk that, due to the small population of Purakaunui, the victim would be identified if her name was released.
She was remanded in custody at the police station, to reappear in court tomorrow.
Detective Sergeant Chris Henderson, of Dunedin, said police would not give any further information about what sort of gun was used, why the man was shot, or if the victim and the alleged offender were known to each other, because the matter was now before the court.
''All we can tell you is the man did receive a gunshot wound, and it was life threatening, and police have still not yet been able to interview him because of his condition.''
Southern District Command Centre Acting Senior Sergeant Jared Kirk said charges against the woman would be reviewed before her next court appearance and it was ''highly likely'' more serious charges would be laid.
A second woman at the Purakaunui scene was identified by police as the victim's partner.
She was transported by police to Dunedin Hospital to be with him. She did not receive any injuries in the incident, Det Sgt Henderson said.
Acting Snr Sgt Kirk said the ''real work'' had begun on what was going to be a ''comprehensive'' investigation into the events which occurred on Friday.
The investigation involved Environmental Science and Research scientists examining the scene, which began on Saturday, and speaking to witnesses, he said.
Purakaunui residents feared the worst on Friday when armed police, including members of the armed offenders squad, swarmed into the seaside community northeast of Dunedin, shortly after the incident unfolded in Bay Rd at 4.25pm.
They quickly surrounded the street with armed officers, who stopped neighbours while AOS members made their way towards the house.
Soon afterward, the Otago Regional Rescue Helicopter landed in the settlement and collect the injured man.
More than half an hour later, about 5pm, the 34 year old woman presented herself to police at the Dunedin Central Police Station, and a firearm was recovered soon after.
