The Chinese tourist accused of causing the death of an Oamaru 5-year-old is unlikely to dispute the cause of the crash, his lawyer told the Dunedin District Court yesterday.

Interim name suppression has lapsed for Jing Cao (32), of Beijing, who is accused of dangerous driving causing the death of Ruby Jay Marris near Moeraki on February 21.

Cao was remanded without plea to reappear on April 14, when a plea would be entered, lawyer Anne Stevens said.

Mrs Stevens said she sought a longer remand to allow legal matters to be attended to. The period also included the Easter break. Cao's bail will continue.

It was ''extremely unlikely'' Cao would dispute the cause of the crash, Mrs Stevens said.

Cao stood in the dock with a translator during the short appearance.

Ruby was killed after Cao allegedly crossed a centre line and crashed into the car carrying her family.

Cao also faces five associated charges of dangerous driving causing injury to Tristan Guy Marris, Kimberley Louise Marris, Sophie Marris, Georgia Marris and Hoo Li Jian.
