Organisers are pleased with the early hours of the street party on Hyde St today.

Dunedin police declined to comment on the party, or say whether any arrests had been made, as a statement will be issued later today.

The party was almost in full swing, its atmosphere good natured, when the Otago Daily Times visited with an Otago University Students' Association guide just after 11am.

By 11am, up to half of an expected almost 4000 party-goers were there.

The association has worked closely with the street's residents to organise the event, including designating some dwellings to host tented areas, barbecues, and water stations.

Volunteers with water canisters on their backs also wandered through the colourfully costumed crowd.
