Veteran pony show organiser Tina Bungard has been recognised at the show she founded 25 years ago.

The Palmerston resident received a trophy and flowers in a presentation during the event at the Palmerston Showgrounds, on Saturday.

In her speech, Miss Bungard said the show had grown from just 20 entries in 1990, to more than 180 horses and riders this year.

''Twenty-five years ago I ran the first Palmerston Mini Show with the help of my family, for children and adults to come along and have a fun day without the worry of the rules and regulations of an A&P show.''

Miss Bungard said her greatest reward was the smile on children's faces when they received their ribbons.

As it grew, she had needed more help, and it became a community event.

Miss Bungard thanked everyone who had helped and taken part, and her partner Dave Kelly. Dunedin resident and long-time attendee Linda McAnally told the Otago Daily Times it was a huge success because it was ''so laid back'' compared with other pony shows.

Miss Bungard had created a ''beautiful atmosphere'' in which children thrived, Mrs McAnally said.

Years ago, Mrs McAnally had brought her daughter Leah (38) to take part. Now, the pair were there supporting Leah's 8-year-old daughter Jasmine in the event.
