The battle for world records raged in Caversham yesterday.

Hundreds gathered at the Caversham Community Group Neighbours Day at Caversham Presbyterian Church Hall to see who in their community could beat the world records for things like eating the most jelly using chopsticks, who could sort the most jellybeans into separate colours by sucking on a straw to pick up individual jellybeans, and how many Caversham residents could be squeezed into the back of a Kia Carnival people-mover.

They were just a few of many events in which residents aimed to beat existing world records.

However, event co-ordinator Sandra Jones said the attempts were unofficial - so unofficial that nobody seemed to know what the existing world records were.

''We're not seriously trying to break the world record.

''We're trying to show that Caversham people are world-beaters.''

But it did not stop organisers from dishing out prizes and certificates to celebrate the success of those who participated in and won events during the day.

At the end of the day, the event seemed to be more about having good old-fashioned fun than anything else.

It was an opportunity for Caversham residents to connect with their neighbours, Mrs Jones said.

For those feeling less energetic, there was also a free sausage sizzle, a bouncy castle and old-fashioned games.
