Sharing the joy of music with Dunedin youngsters is a labour of love for singer Calla Knudson-Hollebon (18), who is leading a new children's music group at Knox Church.

The Piccolo programme, which started last month, is a weekly music group for pre-school children, but is open to all children from babies up to the age of 5 years. Parents are also involved in the sessions.

''The idea of the Piccolo group is to help young children experience different sounds and music, figure out what beats are and make some noise,'' the Dunedin singer said.

''We want to expose them to music at a young age and give them an appreciation for it that will hopefully continue through their lives.''

Music is important at Knox Church, which has a choir and regularly hosts performances by diverse groups - from the acoustic churches tours by leading New Zealand contemporary musicians to early music and choral performances.

''The Piccolo group is a good way for Knox to continue its involvement in the community and to help get more families involved in music,'' Knudson-Hollebon said.

A student at the University of Otago studying psychology, sociology and the environment and society, she is also an accomplished soprano. She was involved in choirs throughout her high school years, and is continuing her vocal performance studies with respected Dunedin teacher Isabel Cunningham. She also does relief teaching with the Saturday Morning Music programme and is training in teaching music to preschoolers and young children.

''It is a very interesting field - some children are more musically inclined than other, but all human beings have the capacity to enjoy music,'' Knudson-Hollebon said.

''It is a beautiful thing, so why not give them that opportunity at a young age?''The Piccolo preschool music programme runs at Knox Church on Tuesday from 9.30am to 10.15am. Entry by koha.
