''The adrenaline was definitely pumping,'' junior lifeguard Bryn Schievink said.

When the 16 year old John McGlashan College pupil helped rescue three teenagers on Friday afternoon at St Kilda beach, he was off duty.

For all three rescues, he went out with Bayfield High School pupil Duncan New (15), also a junior lifeguard.

They first noticed something was wrong about 1pm, when they were ''out for a paddle'' and noticed two people in the water, struggling.

''We stood there for about 10 seconds, and then we saw the younger kid really struggling, and started paddling out,'' Bryn said.

When he reached the 12 year old boy, his head was underwater, and he was sticking his hand up above the water.

''I grabbed his hand and pulled him out, and he was crying,'' Bryn said.

''I said, `I'm here to help, stay calm'.''

Duncan helped with the rescue of a 15 year old boy, who was also struggling, he said.

Afterwards, both junior lifeguards said they were still reeling from the rescues, but decided to go out for another board paddle about three hours later.

''Suddenly, we heard [someone say] `help' a couple of times,'' Bryn said.

As he paddled out to help the 17 year old boy who was crying for help, Bryn caught sight of him, and realised that he knew him.

''That was really shocking,'' he said.

Bryn completed the rescue, and brought him into the St Kilda Surf Life Saving Club, where the 17 year old was ''quite cold, shaking, and dizzy''.

All three of the swimmers made a full recovery from the cold and shock at the surf club, and did not need to go to hospital, the boys said.

For both Bryn and Duncan, Friday was the first time they had made ''serious rescue[s]''.

''I felt proud,'' Bryn said.

''And relief ... if we weren't there, he probably would have drowned.''
