Tansy Morris will walk 50km around Dunedin's hills next month to raise money and awareness of the work Otago Community Hospice does.

''I really enjoy big walks. I wanted something to work towards for myself ... this was something that meant a bit more. It is an organisation that I have always known is there. It is important that we acknowledge and fund it.

''Hospice care is something that none of us want to think about needing, but it is a very real possibility that many of us will encounter it at some stage. The Otago Community Hospice works tirelessly to provide care for the dying and their families in the environment that they wish to be in, and for many people that is their home,'' she said.

Ms Morris' mother, Annie Sutherland, who is a radiation therapist, will walk alongside her daughter on May 2.

''I am so proud of her. I was delighted to go with her when she asked me,'' she said.

Ms Morris, who decided to undertake the challenge late last year, thought 50km was an achievable distance.

''I wanted to push myself to see how far I could walk. I have been walking at least once a week . . . a 10km to 20km walk. When I feel like it, I try to do a bit more.''

The walk, which will start and finish at Forsyth Barr Stadium, is expected to take the pair 12 hours.

So far, Ms Morris has raised $175.

''I would love to raise over $1000,'' she said.
