Firefighters prepare to inspect a smoke alarm at Dunedin's historic courthouse in Stuart St.

The courthouse was evacuated about 1pm yesterday when smoke from a nearby foundry infiltrated the courthouse's air conditioning system, a fire service spokesman said.

The smoke was from the factory's everyday operation and it was a false alarm, he said.

Court proceedings were soon restarted.
