Errors in party mail-out admitted

Dunedin North MP David Clark has admitted a ''dopey'' mistake in a Labour mail-out survey about Dunedin health services.

The Parliamentary Service mail room sent Dr Clark's letter and survey to more than 200 people with names and addresses filled out in the survey form.

Some names and addresses on the survey are wrong.

A survey seen by the Otago Daily Times was filled in with a name and address that were both different from the accompanying letter, which was correctly addressed.

When contacted, Dr Clark readily admitted the mistake, saying he became of aware of it yesterday morning.

''It looks a bit dopey,'' Dr Clark said.

It affected up to 207 forms.

In the letter, Dr Clark said he tried to ''accurately'' represent constituents' views in Parliament.

''I am interested to hear how our under-funded health system is affecting you and those you care about.

''These surveys allow me to do my job well,'' the letter said.

The survey asked people for their views on the hospital food outsourcing plan, proposals to cut services at Dunedin Hospital, and whether they agreed the hospital needed to be rebuilt.

Dr Clark said names and addresses were published in the electoral roll, so the gaffe did not have privacy implications.

''I've spoken with the head of Parliamentary Service and asked him to investigate what has gone wrong in the process of collating surveys and letters into envelopes, to ensure the mistake is not repeated,'' he said.

In addition, about 170 survey forms were sent without name and address details filled in, as the party was trialling different methods in its mail-outs, he said.
