This year's annual posy-making bonanza at HMNZS Toroa finished in record time, RSA administrator Sally Turner said.

And, she said ''we haven't got as many [volunteers] this year.''

Normally, posy-making fell during the school holidays, and ''generally we get a lot of scouts and guides and school children'', who could not show up yesterday, because they were at school.

Still, about 40 people were making posies yesterday.

Gladys Nilson (83) has been helping out with the posy-making for about 15 years.

''I don't know why [I enjoy it],'' she said, laughing.

She first got involved because her husband was in the J-Force, which ''used to do all the arranging and things, years ago, until most of them got too old to actually do it''.

The completed posies were put into boxes and delivered to Andersons Bay cemetery for the posy-laying ceremony this morning.
