The Dunedin City Council has apologised to the Robertson family for including Robertson Park in Middlemarch on a list of surplus land.

Elizabeth Robertson, of Oamaru, said the park was a memorial to her family, and was gifted to the city by her father-in-law, the late George Robertson.

Mrs Robertson wrote a letter of complaint to the Strath Taieri Community Board, which was published in the board's meeting agenda last week.

She was delighted to hear the park was safe when contacted by the Taieri Times.

When contacted, DCC city property manager Kevin Taylor apologised on behalf of his department for the gaffe.

He said the DCC released information under the Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act to the Otago Daily Times last year concerning a possible sell-off of city-owned properties.

The property list, described by the council as a ''work in progress'' at the time, was ''quite literally a very raw catalogue of properties which might or might not have further use in the city ownership'', Mr Taylor said.

Houses, empty sections and parkland were among 149 parcels of property across Dunedin being considered for sale to boost DCC coffers, the ODT reported last September.

The status of the properties had not been investigated before the list was released to the newspaper.

Mr Taylor said the council sought to divest itself of land by following due process, but there was no risk Robertson Park would be sold.

''From my point of view City Property would sincerely apologise because I wouldn't have wanted it in the public domain before we absolutely understood each parcel of land's history.''

Mr Taylor had had to address the same issue with other concerned people.

He said he was not involved with the matter at the time, having only just started the job last September.
