It's an unavoidable quip: The hills around Mosgiel will be alive with the sound of music next month.

Taieri Musical will present the beloved Rodgers and Hammerstein musical The Sound of Music to a new generation of theatre-goers on May 14-23.

And given the number of unforgettable tunes in the score, it will be almost impossible for anyone to go to the show and not come out humming My Favourite Things, Edelweiss, Do-Re-Mi, Sixteen Going on Seventeen, The Lonely Goatherd, Climb Ev'ry Mountain, and the title song, The Sound of Music.

The show is directed and choreographed by Denise Henderson, and the live pit orchestra will be directed by Steve Miles.

Miss Henderson said the show told the true story of Maria, the fun-loving governess who changed the lives of the widowed Captain von Trapp and his seven children by reintroducing them to music.

It originally premiered on Broadway in 1959 and won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

The show opened in London in 1961 and became the longest-running American musical of its generation.

Then in 1965, it was turned into a Hollywood film which starred Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, and won five Oscars, including best picture.

It quickly became the highest-grossing film in history, and even today, The Sound of Music remains the most successful movie musical in history.

Miss Henderson said there had been many adaptations of the show over the years but Taieri Musical's production would remain true to form.

''I think the key thing is it is based on a true story, but there was a lot of licence taken in the movie.

''The family never escaped over the mountains to Switzerland. In fact, they walked out the door and around the corner and got on a train to Italy.

''But essentially, what people are expecting to see is what they are going to get in our show.''

Tickets can be booked by ringing Tania Graham on 027 602 0117.

Taieri Musical was founded in 1968 and has since developed a reputation as a producer of high quality musical theatre.

Recent productions include sellout seasons of My Fair Lady, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Les Miserables, as well as the extremely popular, critically acclaimed production of Mamma Mia in 2014.

In 2018, Taieri Musical will celebrate its 50th anniversary.
