A mistake meant stones laid at the new $6 million Dunedin Botanic Garden propagation buildings had to be replaced.

Dunedin Botanic Garden curator Alan Matchett said the 25mm limestone chip originally laid on a footpath outside the soon-to-open facility was too rough for people using wheelchairs or pushing prams.

The limestone chip was removed from the path - which runs between the garden car park and Opoho Bowling Club - on April 22 and replaced with material which could be compacted, at a cost of $3321.

''This covered the traffic management needed, the removal of the chip, transport of it to the Dunedin Botanic Garden storage yard, and the supply and compaction of the replacement material.''

It was not possible to provide the cost of the original limestone chip as it was included in the cost of all the other work done at the facility.

The limestone chip would eventually be used elsewhere in the garden, he said.

Meanwhile, it is expected the new propagation units - which will replace the garden's existing propagation unit consisting of several 100-year-old glasshouses - will be used soon.

A public opening would be held in the ''not too distant future''.
