Queen's High School has canvassed the community on a new uniform for the school after junior pupils called for a change to their present dress code.

Principal Di Carter said the school's junior pupils were enamoured with the new uniform worn by the school's year 13 pupils.

Before this year, year 13 pupils were allowed to wear mufti to school.

But this year, in a bid to improve the school's image, the board of trustees made it compulsory again for senior pupils to wear a uniform.

The junior pupils liked the look of the seniors' new white blouses and school ties so much, they ran their own survey to see if the senior uniform was preferred to the present junior uniform, which consists of blue blouses and grey skirts.

Pupils overwhelmingly voted in favour of white blouses, a school tie and the return of the school's Anderson tartan kilt, Mrs Carter said.

''It's been a good 10 years since the kilt was last worn here.

''It comes around in circles.''

She said if the school was to bring the kilt back, it would not be like the woollen one worn in the past.

''It would be a wool blend - nowhere near as itchy as the old one, and this one will stay semi-pressed.''

Mrs Carter said she personally liked the idea.

''I absolutely love the tartan.

''It just looks a lot smarter.''

She said a survey of the community was completed this week, and opinions would be presented to the school's board of trustees before an official decision was made.

If the board agreed to the new uniform, it would be made compulsory for year 9 pupils next year, and any pupils from year 10-12 who would also like to wear it, could buy one, she said.
