Proceeds from a fabric bazaar in Mosgiel this month will be used to support child literacy programmes on the Taieri.

The Altrusa Fabric Craft Bazaar, on May 23, at the Senior Citizens Hall in Hartstonge Ave, was the first such event hosted by Altrusa International of Taieri, president Claire Paterson said.

''We've been supported so well from the community that we are excited about it,'' Mrs Paterson said.

A call for donations elicited a tremendous response from Mosgiel and Dunedin, and there would be a wide range of fabric, wool, craft items, and haberdashery, Mrs Paterson said.

The quality of the goods was likely to impress, she said.

Schoolchildren would be at the bazaar knitting peggy squares for blankets for Nepal earthquake victims.

Two quilts donated by Needle 'n Thread, in Dunedin, would be raffled on the day.

The organisation hoped to raise $4000, with which it would establish a fund for child literacy.

• The event starts at 10am. Entry is free.
