Man charged over Palmerston baby assault

A 30-year-old man has been arrested and charged over the serious assault of a two-month-old baby in Palmerston.

He will appear in the Dunedin District Court on four charges, including wounding causing grievous bodily harm.

The baby was taken to Dunedin Hospital with multiple fractures to the limbs and a brain injury on April 10.

It was initially feared that the injuries were life-threatening.

Southern district investigations manager Detective Inspector Tom Fitzgerald said today a significant investigation had been undertaken over the past five weeks by a team from the Dunedin Police Child Protection Team.

Police were unable to make any further comment as the matter is before the court.
