Television content has elbowed its way into awards usually garnered by the likes of food and beverage companies, after Dunedin's Natural History New Zealand won a New Zealand China Trade Association business award.

NHNZ managing director Kyle Murdoch said his company was probably the only non-food or non-beverage company to have won such an award.

Its outstanding contribution was recognised at a ceremony late last week in Auckland.

The awards acknowledge business excellence in New Zealand companies, although Mr Murdoch said they were usually ''dominated by milk companies, as well as food and beverage companies''.

NHNZ, which has an office in Beijing with a staff of five, had produced more than 60 hours of documentary programming about China in the past 15 years, and more in production and development.

That included shows such as Panda Valley High and Panda Republic, as well as natural history documentaries.

NHNZ had fostered relationships with state television broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV), the State Information Office and smaller local producers.

A television co-production agreement signed last year between New Zealand and China was something that ''has really helped our business''.

''This year alone, we've got up to 20 hours in various stages of production,'' Mr Murdoch said.

There was a memorandum of understanding with CCTV Kids, to get NHNZ's ZooMoo channel into China.

All that activity meant a boost for the company, and employees.

''There's more product coming through this business, therefore there's more people employed to work.''
