Cold winds set to batter South

Winds are expected to pick up in the lower South Island tomorrow with the possibility of severe gales.

MetService has issued a severe weather watch for Southland and Otago with gales forecast for Clutha, southern parts of Southland and Dunedin on Monday.

Severe gales could batter the areas from late tomorrow morning and should ease by tomorrow night, MetService Meteorologist Stephen Glassey said.

The winds would also bring colder temperatures for the South Island during the day, he said.

"The winds are definitely going to be strong...It's going to be quite cold as well, with the winds particularly adding to the wind chill.

"The winds will make it feel colder than what it actually is so people will need to dress warmly and keep up to date with the latest forecasts."
