Concern arsonist targeting vehicles

A firefighter is concerned a serial arsonist could be targeting vehicles in southern Dunedin after he was called to an arson attempt yesterday.

St Kilda Senior Station Officer Ben Pitelen said the owner of a Nissan Primera noticed yesterday petrol had been poured around his parked car in Ings Ave, St Clair.

The car was not damaged but paper and matches were found nearby.

''There are clear signs somebody attempted to ignite it.''

He knew of three vehicle arsons in the southern Dunedin area in recent weeks.

''We are a bit concerned about it ... We have someone who is setting fire to cars in the area,'' Mr Pitelen said.

Suspicious behaviour should be reported to police.

Senior Sergeant Craig Brown, of Dunedin, said the attempted arson was reported to police at 9.30am yesterday.

An accelerant was left near the car. Details of the incident could not be disclosed as the investigation was continuing.

He would not speculate on whether the vehicle fires in the area were linked.
