Tight spot for team

Alternative arrangements have been made for the Pirates senior rugby team, but the disappearance of its playing strip remains a mystery.

The team's playing kit - including jerseys, shorts and socks - was stolen from the team van at the weekend.

Club chairman and senior player Conrad Stedman said the team would be able to use last year's premier strip for this weekend's match against Kaikorai, but that was a ''concern''.

''Some of the players aren't in the shape for premier jerseys,'' he said, with a laugh.

He initially joked that the team would have to appear nude, but some vociferous opposition from within the team's ranks had quashed that possibility.

''At the end of the day I will see if I can get a couple of the boys to get out in the nude,'' he said.

The possibility of a nude Pirates team had caused excitement in St Kilda.

The offer for an amnesty remained open to whoever took the team's kit, as did the offer to join the team.

''I'm more than happy to have them if they want to play with us,'' he said.

''They might have to do some extra yards, though.''

The kit can be returned to the Pirates Rugby Football Club by contacting Conrad Stedman on 021 311 551.
