Reading the William Shakespeare comedy The Taming of the Shrew in the 86 Hour Shakespeare Marathon at Fortune Theatre Studio last night were artistic director Lara Macgregor (playing Katherina) and Dunedin City councillor Aaron Hawkins (Petruchio).
Theatre spokeswoman Lucy Summers said more than 90 actors would attempt to read 37 Shakespeare plays ''back-to-back'' in 86 hours.
''As far as we know it's a New Zealand first.''
The marathon started about 8pm yesterday with The Taming of the Shrew and would end with The Winter's Tale about 10am on Monday.
The performance was open to the public for a gold-coin donation at the door.
