Animal labs to library move axed

A proposal to temporarily move University of Otago animal testing labs into the medical library building has been abandoned.

The plan was axed because it would have ''required too many compromises'', a university spokeswoman said.

Otago University Medical Students' Association president Tash Austin said students were ''very pleased'' with the decision to keep the medical library open.

''We hope access to this resource continues into the future for the benefit of our students,'' she said.

The university made plans to move the labs after what the Otago Daily Times understands was a parasitic worm outbreak at the previous facility last year.

At the time, the University of Otago posted a job offer on its website for a fixed-term role to manage a relocation of the medical library, but also said it was ''yet to make a final decision on whether the project involved relocating the medical library, which is spread over three floors in the Sayers Building''.

The university spokeswoman said other options were being considered for the lab relocation.

An upgrade to the animal housing component of the labs announced last July was ''continuing''.
