The ''nerve-racking but exciting'' build of a new supermarket in Green Island is on track for an opening early next year. It will employ up to 60 staff.

Workers have been busy levelling and compacting land for the past month on which to build the new supermarket - Fresh Choice Green Island.

The new supermarket will replace the existing SuperValue, also on Main Rd.

Owner and operator John Moyle said the new supermarket building was ''on track'' and the most accurate opening date he could give was some time in the first three months of next year.

The building project made him feel ''nervous'' but he was pleased it was under way.

''We've been talking about it for a long time and it's finally happening and it's nerve-racking but ... exciting.''

The workers had not found anything ''untoward'' during the initial work which could stall the opening date.

The precast concrete walls were expected to be up within the next two months.

The supermarket floor space would be 1500sq m and the site would have 87 car parks.

The retail area was more than 2.5 times bigger than that of the existing supermarket and the range would be twice as big.

Mr Moyle said he was looking forward to the business operation ''being all under the one roof'' because at the moment Moyle's Supervalue Supermarket was spread over two buildings and shipping containers.

''It'll be a lot more efficient than what we are now. Everything now is man-handled around the shop and up and down stairs and between containers and building, and out in the weather.''

The new supermarket was ''on the right side of the road'' to alleviate traffic congestion between 3pm and 6pm in the Green Island business district, he said.

The new supermarket would be open 14 hours a day and have 30 full-time equivalent jobs.

Some of the roles would be part-time so up to 60 staff could be employed, he said.

The Moyle family have operated the supermarket in Green Island for more than 76 years.
