The wheels are rolling on a hugely popular venture to supply wholesale fruit and vegetables to Dunedin people on a tight budget.

The Vege Co-op - established by members of the All Saints Church and administered by the Otago Healthy Living Trust - has begun supplying vegetable packs to some of the 1100 people who have signed up.

All Saints Church vicar Michael Wallace said they were slowly building up the service to the point where they could supply everyone every week.

The co-op supplied 114 packs last week and today they were expecting to increase that to 150.

Vegetable packs range in size from a week's supply for one person for $3, couple's packs for $6 and a family of four pack for $12.

One of those to pick up a pack for his family was Daniel Fridberg, from Israel but living in Dunedin while he studies at the National Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Otago.

He said the vegetable pack was ''amazing''.

Priest assistant Ivica Gregurec said they had plenty of volunteers at this stage with more than 100 people offering their services.

Distribution centres had been set up at St Thomas' Church in Pine Hill and at All Saints Church near the University of Otago.

Two more centres would be added over the next few weeks in Northeast Valley and Caversham.

Fruit and Vege committee member Julanne Clarke-Morris said they were amazed at how smoothly it had gone in the first two weeks.

She said the mix of vegetables available was standard across all the packs, so it would not suit those who wanted more choice.
