Burglaries, thefts linked, police say

Police believe two burglaries in Dunedin on Wednesday are linked to recent car thefts in the area and have warned residents to be vigilant.

Senior Sergeant Liz Waru said the burglaries happened during the day in the Portobello Rd-Musselburgh Rise area.

Police believed a thief was ''active in the area''. A string of thefts in South Dunedin during the weekend is believed to be linked to the burglaries.

Nine cars were broken into between last Thursday and Saturday.

In the latest offending, a ladder left lying on the property was used to break into a house, Snr Sgt Waru said.

People should take precautions to secure their property and remove valuables from their cars, she said.

Anyone with information was asked to contact Dunedin police on 471-4800.
