There are few mushrooms that have the ability to light up your life.

But the ones being built for the Midwinter Carnival Lantern Parade will.

Several mushroom shaped lanterns have been made, along with lanterns in the shape of a peacock and a water fountain.

They are new large lanterns for this year's flower garden themed parade, which, it is hoped, will turn the Octagon into an sea of light on June 20. About 500 flower shaped lanterns are also being made at workshops, which will go alongside the large lanterns and others made in previous years.

Workshop co ordinator Filipa Crofskey said only two lantern making workshops were left to go, and production was on track for the 500 lantern target.

She said the popularity of the workshops had been overwhelming and it there were no more spare spaces for the remaining workshops.

''We've had about 1500 people take part, and all of them will be in the parade.

''It's great to see its [the parade's] popularity growing, but we will have to start restricting numbers now, otherwise we won't be able to fit them all in the Octagon for the parade.''
