Driver flees after car hits pole

Dunedin police are investigating after a car crashed into a power pole at Forbury early yesterday and the driver fled.

Emergency services, including Lookout Point Station firefighters, were called about 1am yesterday, after a car crashed into the pole at the corner of Easther Cres and Forbury Rd.

The driver of the car ''jumped a fence and ran away'', a Fire Service spokesman said.

• Police are investigating a car fire in Tunnel Beach Rd, Blackhead, yesterday morning.

When St Kilda Station firefighters arrived about 5.20am, a Honda Integra was ''totally involved'' in fire, the Fire Service spokesman said.

''The brigade believe it was possibly stolen.''

A firefighter wearing breathing apparatus used a hose to extinguish the blaze.

• About 1.30am yesterday, St Kilda Station firefighters were called to a ''suspicious'' wheelie bin fire, near a house in Kirkcaldy St, South Dunedin.

''It was extinguished with no real problem but they did have to help get a fair amount of smoke out of the house.''

• Dunedin Station firefighters were called to a couch fire in Clyde St, North Dunedin, about 4.20am.
