Water is draining away at Brighton Domain but it is too soon to tell if remedial work has fixed the problem, Saddle Hill Community Board chairman Scott Weatherall says.

Mr Weatherall said the Dunedin City Council finished ''remedial'' drainage work to the domain at the end of last year and he was waiting to see if the work would stop water pooling on the domain this winter.

''We hope it is. If it is, that's fantastic. If it's not, then the redrainage needs to happen.''

The board made submissions for a better drainage system at the domain at the council's past 10 long-term plan hearings, he said.

For the latest hearing, he had a quote prepared for a drainage plan.

Asplundh area manager Alan Page estimated the required drainage system would cost $136,800.

Mr Weatherall said although water had not pooled at the domain, more rain was needed before a decision could be made.

''I don't think we have had enough rain yet to decide whether the remedial work is going to be enough.''

Mr Weatherall said if it was determined a drainage system was needed, the council pledged to have it installed in the next financial year.
