Cable car society enthusiastic

THE trust behind plans to return cable cars to Dunedin's High St is upbeat about the future after a successful public meeting on Thursday night.

Dunedin Heritage Light Rail Trust spokesman Neville Jemmett said about 35 people attended the meeting, at which signatures were gathered to launch the new High Street Cable Car Society Inc.

The society aimed to act as the operational arm for the project, while the trust focused on fundraising through community grants.

Mr Jemmett said the next step would be to launch a ''major'' fundraising drive aimed at raising the $2million needed to house a museum and cable car house.

The building would replace a temporary shed the trust hoped to build in Mornington before Christmas, which would act as a temporary home for two former High St cable cars returning on long-term leases from Christchurch.
