Entries have opened for a photography competition celebrating the greater Green Island area.

Greater Green Island Community Network community worker Lynda Davidson said the photos entered in the ''Greater Green Island Gems'' competition could be of anything ''amazing'' in the area and were only limited by photographers' imaginations.

Possible subjects included a person, a place or an activity.

The competition was open to photographers from ''Concord right through to Brighton, and Fairfield and Abbotsford'' and was open until June 24.

Entries had to be on an official entry form and include a ''six inch by four inch'' printed photo.

Harvey Norman was providing free printing for more than 1000 pupils from eligible schools - Concord Primary,

Green Island, St Peter Chanel, Fairfield, Abbotsford, Big Rock Primary schools and Te Kura Kaupapa Maori O Otepoti.

Photographers could get volunteers to print photos for free at a ''pop-up space'' in the foyer of the Lighthouse Baptist Church, in Main South Rd, any time between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday, until the competition closes.

The competition offered five prizes for five age groups: Age 5-8, $200 voucher for The Warehouse; 9-12, a Samsung tablet; 13-18, GoPro video camera; 19-64, $500 Meridian mall voucher; 65+, $500 Meridian mall voucher.

The winning photo from every school would be made into a canvas by Harvey Norman and would be given to the school, she said.

The competition would be judged by a ''keen photographer'', the Anglican Bishop of Dunedin, the Rt Rev Dr Kelvin Wright.

The prizegiving would be held in the Civic Hall in Howden St, Green Island, between noon and 3pm on Sunday, June 28, and would include a ''midwinter munch'' of free pizza.

Network volunteers would be at the hall asking people for ideas for future projects.

''There is free pizza but you're expected to pay with an idea,'' Mrs Davidson said.

In 2014, the network was selected for the Government's annual community development scheme to receive $80,000 a year for three years.

Mrs Davidson said Minister for the Community and Voluntary Sector Jo Goodhew would be visiting the ''pop-up space'' on Friday for morning tea and the Green Island School choir would perform.
