A fierce blaze which engulfed a Dunedin panelbeaters, sending flames 30m high and triggering explosions, has been brought under control.

Six fire trucks, an "aerial unit" and a "command unit" were used to bring the fire at Bodyline Collison Panel and Paint in Wharf St under control.

A Fire Service spokesman said the fire started in the 20m by 45m warehouse at 8.51pm and was "well involved" when firefighters arrived.

Several fire fighters in breathing apparatus battled the blaze. All persons had been accounted for.

At the height of the fire, explosions were coming from inside the warehouse and two cars parked outside were well ablaze.

Flames about 30m high were shooting over the building and black smoke was billowing from the warehouse across Otago Harbour.

The roof caved in and glass was heard smashing as fire crews battled the blaze.

While the fire is now under control, firefighters are still on scene as it has not been fully extinguished.

A fire investigator will check the warehouse tomorrow.
