A fire investigator is examining a "buckled" and burnt Dunedin panelbeater's shop after fire gutted the business last night.

Senior Station Officer Pete Douglas, of Dunedin, said firefighters from Dunedin Station had taken control of the fire of Bodyline Collision Panel and Paint in Wharf St this morning.

"There is still a hotspot in there. We are here to make sure nothing flares up."

However, there was not much left inside the building to burn, he said.

Explosions had compromised the integrity of the buckled building, he said.

The blaze was battled externally and nobody had entered the building, he said.

Some people visited the site this morning trying to spot their cars from beyond the yellow cordon tape.

SSO Douglas said there were "quite a few" cars inside and he believed the fleet could have included classic cars.

The front of a Ford Mondeo parked outside the building had melted.

The owner, Sean Blair, was on scene this morning and held a staff meeting in Ellisons Aluminium next door.

A fire investigator was on the scene trying to determine the cause of the fire.
