Otago Polytechnic cookery students, like Lauren Wright (18, left) and Leanne Morrison (18), were up at 6.30am yesterday preparing for the twice-annual market day, which raised about $1000 for South Dunedin flood victims.
Chief lecturer Julie Feary-Law, who also organised the market day, said usually, the market day was a fundraiser for the cookery students' own field trips.
But after hearing about the floods in South Dunedin, ''we thought, why don't we do something?''
She reckoned about 150 people had come through the market, held in the sun-soaked ''ozone lounge'' in one of the polytechnic's buildings.
They decided to hold the market inside yesterday because of the weather this week, she said.
''When it's cold and horrible, we're inside.''
Ms Wright said she was happy to give the market proceeds to South Dunedin because ''I reckon it's a good cause''.
''I have peers who were affected [by the flooding],'' she said.
