What do a large industrial switchboard, some urinals, a set of heavy duty guillotine blades, a bench grinder, some boots and a Sorvall Superspeed centrifuge have in common?

They were just some of the hundreds of items auctioned at the University of Otago property services division auction in the Wickliffe Building on Saturday - much of it going under the hammer for about $20.

The equipment is surplus to requirements for the university and has been in storage at the Wickliffe Building for the past five years.

Auction co ordinator Graham Musgrave, of property services recycling, said the items on sale were a ''real mismatch'', from high tech equipment to casserole dishes, furniture, shelves and spare doors and windows.

The auction was managed by Hayward's Dunedin and attracted more than 100 people.

Hayward's auctioneer Kevin Hayward said the solid wooden furniture was a highlight of the auction.

''There's a whole range of stuff - something for everyone.''

Mr Musgrave said the auction might be the first of a series of regular auctions, as property services clears out the Wickliffe Building for possible future use.
