A former Dunedin man has been arrested following the death of a toddler in Taranaki.
The two-year-old died on Friday after police and ambulance staff were called to a residential address.
Detective Senior Sergeant Brent Matuku confirmed a 27-year-old man was arrested and charged with assault this morning in relation to the incident.
Ambulance and police were called to the scene at about 11pm on Friday.
They were unable to revive the girl, a St John spokesman said.
The man, who has interim name suppression, was remanded in custody. He is due to appear in Hawera District Court tomorrow.
