A good Samaritan with two spare tickets to Saturday's Super Rugby final is on the hunt for an Otago family who missed out.

An auction website user with the handle raquel23 posted a message on a ticket listing on Monday saying she had missed out and how upset her 7-year-old son was that he could not go.

Former Dunedin woman Rachel Gilchrist, of Wellington, saw the message and wanted to help.

She secured four tickets in the initial release on Monday and four more yesterday, leaving her with two spare.

She was willing to sell the tickets to the family for $77, the price she paid.

''I went on [the website] for comments of people that had missed out,'' Mrs Gilchrist said.

''I saw the comments from raquel23 [yesterday] and that she had paid $1300 for flights.

''It would be really cool if I could get them the tickets.''

Mrs Gilchrist emailed the user but, as of yesterday afternoon, had not received a response.

''Hopefully, they get to go,'' she said.

The message read: ''I was in the queue [Ticketek] from 3.30 and had my ticket in the cart and processing four times. I got that same message four times.

''The first time it was processing I simultaneously paid $1300 for flights up.

''The reason we wanted to go is because my 7-year-old son is obsessed with rugby and he has been to every [Highlanders] home game.

''He can recite player stats from both teams ... He cried so much when we told him he couldn't go''.
