The Doctor, played by Josh Larkins (16), steps out of the Tardis in the Octagon, Dunedin, yesterday evening, watched by his companion, Michaela Sharp (16, left) and three Daleks (from left) Leo Lublow-Catty (12), Michael Rietveld (11) and Alex Haszard (11).

They were part of a 50-strong ''flash mob'' which included other Otago Gang Show cast members, both scouts and guides, ranging in age from 10 to 28.

Their mission was to promote the latest Gang Show, which opens at the Mayfair Theatre next Tuesday at 7.30pm and runs until next Saturday evening, including a 2pm matinee performance that day.

Gang Show organiser Howard Brockie said the theme of the previous 29 annual shows had been kept under wraps until the opening night, but, given the appeal of this year's Dr Who theme, it had been decided to break with tradition and promote it in advance.

He was pleased with the public response to the Octagon presentation, and said the show had also been promoted more through social media this year.
