Dunedin Police have launched a homicide investigation after a woman was found dead at Waldronville address last night.

Police have confirmed she was Vicki Lee Warington, aged 48, of Dunedin.

A 22 year-old man has been arrested in relation to the incident and is receiving medical care for a number of injuries.

Another man who was found outside the address is also being treated for injuries.

No one else is being sought in relation to the incident.

About 20 investigators with other police staff and specialist teams, including ESR, are working on the case and will start a scene examination today.

Police said they were called to the scene about 6.30pm and the woman was found dead inside the property.

Asked if a stabbing had occurred and if any weapons had been recovered, a police spokesman said that such matters could be clarified only through continuing police inquiries, and through a postmortem.

''That will form part of our inquiries.''

Within an hour of the callout, police had placed a large cordon around the area and police cars and flashing lights could be seen.

Police said uniformed officers and CIB detectives were attending and inquiries were being undertaken to ascertain what had happened.

Saddle Hill Community Board chairman Scott Weatherall said last night the incident was ''a tragedy within the community'' and had come as a great shock in a quiet rural area.

The community would offer any ''community support, family support'' required for the people affected.

''They'll rally around,'' he said.

''There's no doubt that any support the family may want will be given,'' Mr Weatherall said.

The mutual support within the Waldronville community was ''very, very high'' and people would soon ensure that any support needed would be provided.
