More than 1000 Land Rovers, military vehicles, 4WDs, Chevrolets and convertibles are on show at the Dunedin Community Gallery this week - albeit in miniature.

The Otago branch of the New Zealand Model Vehicle Club is showing a variety of models from the collections of 11 members to coincide with the Cadbury Chocolate Festival this week.

Club secretary-treasurer Eric Brockie (78) said the annual event featured models from manufacturers including Matchbox, Dinky, Brumm and Tri-ang, some of them worth between $400 and $500.

Mr Brockie said it was difficult to ascertain how many people had visited the display since it opened on Monday but encouraged everyone, especially children, to come.

''It's very much an adults' hobby now,'' Mr Brockie said.

''When we first started, we had people saying 'What the hell do you want to collect kids' toys for?'.''

But Mr Brockie's passion for models was clear and he was an avid collector himself, having gathered every Matchbox car available until the 1990s.

One of his favourites was a late-1960s orange Spot-On Land Rover made by Tri-ang and valued at more than $400.

The display runs until tomorrow afternoon.
