Halberg Disability Sport Foundation Otago and Southland adviser Bridget Meyer is collecting sports gear for disabled Tongan children.

Ms Meyer, of Dunedin, said she was paying for a week-long trip to Tonga on August 15.

The purpose of the trip was to get sports gear to the Mango Tree Centre, a disability centre in Nuku'alofa.

The centre was funded by the Korean and Japanese Governments and run by a missionary couple.

She took sports gear to the centre in April last year and held a sports day at the centre for about 40 disabled children.

''They came from all over the island. It went off big time,'' Ms Meyer said.

The sports played included cricket for blind children and basketball for children in wheelchairs.

She planned to hold two sports days on the upcoming trip and train the two staff at the centre.

''So once I go, they can carry on with the sports days.''

She had been collecting donations of new and used sports gear in Dunedin and was keen to fill the three large big sports bags Air New Zealand had allowed her to take free.

Sports gear could be given at Sport Otago in Dunedin.

Anyone wanting to know what gear was needed could email bridget@halberg.co.nz.
