Man badly cut in fall

A 73-year-old Ohai man with a ''large laceration'' to his arm managed to drive himself to the local fire station to seek help yesterday.

The man received a cut about 22cm long to his right arm after falling into a glass window at his home about 5pm, Ohai Volunteer Fire Brigade Chief Fire Officer John Hogg said last night.

The man had apparently overbalanced while at home, and put his arm through the glass louvre window while trying to stop his fall, Mr Hogg said.

Despite his injury, the man drove to neighbours living beside the nearby Ohai fire station, who volunteered as medics for the brigade, to seek help, Mr Hogg said.

A St John spokeswoman said the man was taken by ambulance to Southland Hospital, in Invercargill, with moderate injuries.
