Youth dragged down George St by car

A youth needed surgery on his leg after being hit by a car and dragged down George St in Dunedin yesterday morning, police say.

Senior Sergeant Craig Dinnissen, of Dunedin, said a 17-year-old youth was taken to Dunedin Hospital by ambulance after being hit by the car in George St, near the Westpac Bank Moray Pl branch, about 2.26am.

Police were pursuing a named suspect in relation to the incident, Snr Sgt Dinnissen said.

The incident followed a confrontation between two groups of people but it was unclear whether the victim was involved in the confrontation.

The vehicle, a Mitsubishi Legnum white station wagon, was later found discarded at Chisholm Links, at St Kilda, by another driver who had followed it, Snr Sgt Dinnissen said. The car was now in police possession.

A St John spokesman said the injuries the man suffered were unknown.
