An old boot covered with the pages of a telephone book.

A second-hand cup and saucer filled with wax.

A tiny Christmas tree made from Suffolk puffs.

Or a door stop, a candle and a tiny Christmas tree made out of cleverly crafted material.

These are some of the slightly unusual creations of a Fairfield-based club that started in 1977, when it was predominantly made up of young mothers in the suburb.

Fairfield Craft Group committee member Judith Mann is the one behind this particular array of objects.

Miss Mann said, while only one member had been there since the club started, it was going strong and had between 20 and 25 members.

It met on the first Thursday of every month, often with a crafts person invited to teach members new skills.

Miss Mann said a wide range of crafts were produced by members, from pin cushions to brooches to wall plaques.

Her doorstop, for instance, was of a simple design, with the telephone book pages decorated with beads and just an old brick, or similar, needed to give weight.

Brooches she produced were made from felt.

The club was not just about crafts, however - she liked the group ''because I enjoy the company, and I enjoy doing something like this'', Miss Mann said.

''Some people sell their stuff. A lot of it's given away.

''It's just a bit of fun, actually.

Members also had ''a lot of interest in crafts'', group member Genny Hamming added.

The best thing was ''just getting together, the social aspect'', Miss Mann said.

Members came from Fairfield, but also from Mosgiel, Green Island and ''a few from Dunedin''.

The club meets at the Fuel Church.
