Doctor top fundraiser

Nationwide fundraiser Dry July has come and gone and a Dunedin doctor has raised the most money for his booze break.

Southern District Health Board medical oncologist Dr Christopher Jackson raised more than $6130 for giving booze the boot during July.

A story on his fundraising effort that appeared in the Otago Daily Times last week resulted in a $3500 boost.

''It's absolutely overwhelming . . . It has shown how people are prepared to pitch in to try and make things a little bit better for other people. I think it's a good sign of a very healthy community.''

The money he raised would pay for patient support services in the South.

A Dunedin Cancer Service team of 17, including Dr Jackson, raised $15,760, more than any other team in New Zealand.

''We will be able to put that money to some really good projects for patient support,'' Dr Jackson said.

Donations can be made on the Dry July website until the end of this month.
