If mural painting is up your alley, submit a design and beautify a Dunedin valley.

The Valley Project manager Marty Cancilla said artists had been invited to submit mural designs they could paint on a Northeast Valley substation.

Dunedin City Council-owned company Delta had agreed to fund the painting of a 6m by 4m mural on part of a substation in North Rd.

The artist would be given $1000 to paint the mural and another $600 to cover paint and equipment hire costs.

''It's a big boring blue wall right now and the art will liven it up,'' Mr Cancilla said.

Designs reflecting Northeast Valley's ''local history, or the flora, fauna, or people'' would be given preference, he said.

The area to be painted regularly had graffiti removed from it and he hoped the mural would stop the ''tagging''.

''It works, it really does, and it looks good.''

Entries would close at the end of next month. The judging panel would include representatives from the Northern Artery artists collective, The Valley Project and Delta.
