Jacobi Kohu-Morris is fast becoming known as the young man with the golden voice, especially when it comes to speech competitions.

The 18 year old Logan Park High School head boy won the Lions Clubs New Zealand Young Speechmaker national final in Tauranga on Saturday - yet another win in a long list of speech successes in the past year.

The competition was for speech makers under 21.

Jacobi spoke about the legacy and example of our forebears who displayed leadership, resilience and courage when they fought at Gallipoli 100 years ago.

He also gave a three minute impromptu speech on the topic of ''keeping safe''.

For his efforts, he was awarded a six week trip to Canada and the United States in January next year.

Jacobi said the speech competition was the last one he would do as a secondary school pupil.

''It's nice to finish on a high. This one is the highlight for me.''

Jacobi qualified for the national final after winning the Otago South Canterbury final of the Lions Young Speechmaker competition in Oamaru in July.

Whether it is exploring race relations, United Nations Youth Debates, speaking as a Youth MP, or delivering a state of the nation address at the New Zealand First party conference, Jacobi said he always aimed to inspire his audience to think about the kind of society we want to live in.

He has won Dunedin secondary schools' Manu Korero, Lions, Race Unity, Model United Nations and RSA regional speech and debating competitions, and has represented Otago and Southland at many national events.

He was runner up in the New Zealand Race Unity and RSA speech competitions.

After finishing second in the RSA competition, he was one of 24 New Zealand youth ambassadors sent to Gallipoli for the Anzac Day 100th anniversary celebrations.

Jacobi said he planned to pursue a career in law and politics next year.
